Fresnel Lens at Maumee State Park Lodge
Maumee State Park was not too far from Bowling Green, where Rachel had a class this past Saturday. So we stayed a night there in the camper last night. Thanks to Google for taking us to “State Park in Maumee, Ohio” and not “Maumee State Park”! DOH! We finally got to the RIGHT state park after going on a goose-chase with a map that was not looked at more carefully before the trip! Google does not disappoint too often, but this time they did!
In the lodge at Maumee State Park, there is a Fresnel lends on display. I never really looked too closely at them, but they are triangular pieces of glass that run in a circle through a brass framework! I thought they were solid glass, and was still impressed. Having seen the complexity of how they are made, I was even more impressed.
Rachel pointed out that when the lenses were in use, they used mercury too lubricate the support the lenses were mounted on. I had not known that fact! More on Fresnel lenses here on Wikipedia.
