June 27, 2011 Storm Chase
It is hard to see small, but view large and see the bottom of the cloud.
Well, the weather didn’t seem to bad tonight. We got some rain to end tennis practice as Wilmington High School. So James and I went to Kroger for some popcorn, a car for him, and a couple sodas. The clouds were dark in patches, but sunny in between.
As we were driving from Kroger towards home on westbound US 22/3/73, the tornado sirens went off. There were two dark clouds, one in front of us and a larger one behind. So I called Rachel to see which had the alert storm in it. She said it was in New Vienna heading east.
James was with me, so I couldn’t chase as much as I normally would solo (like the other 5 times), but we were SO close, and the storm was moving away. So I turned around to see what the horizon showed us. As soon as I got to the park in the middle of town, I could see 2 distinct funnels trying to form from a wedge shaped storm!
We went a little further on Fife Avenue just past Williams Memorial Park heading east. I got the shots below on my phone. The lens is just too puny for showing much, but there were at least 2-3 different funnels trying to form into a tornado from what we saw.
Then on the way home, a much smaller storm was forming something on the trailing edge but it was small…
