Tornado Chase 05/30/09 – Roger Meets Twister!

After our meeting tonight at church, I went chasing after another storm with tornado potential. I not only caught up to it south of Wilmington, but was literally in the middle of it!

Just about 5-6 miles south of 22 and 3 on SR 73, the hail turned into a very powerful and rotating wind with me in the middle.

The contents of a person’s back yard exploded into motion from the wind, and blew across the road, striking my Jimmy in the rear. I turned around and headed back towards Wilmington, and found a telephone pole had been snapped and was across the road. Got across that and called 911 to get an officer on the scene to protect motorists.

I did get photos at the moment of impact, but on a just-purchased disposable camera. Will have to wait for development.

My partially educated guess is that I went through a small F1 tornado. I want to be a chaser full time!
