The Down Side of “Fracking”

The Down Side of “Fracking”

For the past year or two, lots of folks around the country have been talking about “fracking”. This is a process of fracturing rocks below the ground surface with high-pressure water and chemicals to release petroleum. This fuel source has the potential to take the United States off of its dependence on foreign oil substantially. However, the problem with it is the process: water + chemicals = risk.

Just the other day, I finally heard what I was fully expecting, the EPA states that there are links between this process and contaminated ground water. Read the full NPR story here.

Since I work in the small village of Yellow Springs, OH, I hear a lot about “Fracking”. It seems that some businesses are interested in the process north of the village. You can read more about that here on the YS News site.

I would love to see us find a way to get this valuable resource from shale, and not be dependent on foreign countries for our oil, I don’t want to give up our water and our health. Read about it, stay informed, and let your government leaders know how you feel about it. There may be a better way to accommodate us all – safely.
